When RIM married the telephone and the computer they created the Blackberry.  It was the perfect solution for the Information Technology (IT) crowd.  Until the Blackberry came along, members of the geek crowd carried around a pager (or two), a cell phone and a laptop.  Clients demanded immediate response to their PC problems. So the boss awarded the “lucky” on-call support person temporary ownership of a laptop, cell phone – and a pager (or two).  It was pretty cool to be the guy or the on-call gal with all those gadgets–a modern technological icon.  It was a lot of stuff to haul and just a much to accidently leave behind in the airport restroom.

The Blackberry Instead

When RIM came out with the Blackberry those of us in the IT crowd jumped for this solution.  The Blackberry was a combination cell phone, computer and pager.  The beauty of all this convenience was that it fit in the palm of your hand.  You could check email driving to the airport.  You could even use it to plug it into a router and configure a network. Yes, we still had to clip the Blackberry device to the belt or purse, but it meant we could dump the pager and keep the laptop in the bag for another trouble call.  Happily, we traded in our cell phones for those marvelous Blackberry gadgets.

Multi-Purpose Tool of Choice

Today, the Blackberry Bold 9900 Touch is the combination tool of choice for IT professionals.  The high-resolution screen on the BlackBerry Smartphone provides a clear display for messaging, browsing the Web and searching through email and files stored on the Blackberry 9900.  Transitioning off older models is not an upgrade nightmare.  Files and emails are easily transferred.  The 9900 Bold Touch has an easy-to-use keyboard, wider than previous models. It is lighter, brighter, and faster providing more functionality than earlier Blackberry models.  Email compatibility and synchronization with enterprise email systems is a “must have” for people in support roles.
The Blackberry 9900 Bold offers more utility for users, but above all things; it offers more security that competitive Smartphones. RIM’s Blackberry Smartphones have been the overwhelming choice for corporations and government agencies. The main reason for this preference is that RIM understood how much valuable information is held on this type of device. The security built into the BlackBerry 9900 and the Blackberry Enterprise Solution allows professionals to confidently access sensitive information wherever they may be.  No matter what industry or government sector, the Blackberry 9900 Bold Touch provides secure utility and function to meet goals while safeguarding critical records and information.

Are you a star wars fan? If you are, then you’ll probably be pleased to find out that scientist have found a real life Tatooine!

Well, it might be a giant gas planet incapable of sustaining life, but it DOES orbit two stars at once. The planet will be much too cold for it to have any lift on it – or at least any life that we are aware of – but

It was thought that this was impossible, as the gravitational pull of two suns would probably cause most planets to have a disrupted orbit and eventually fall into the star or be flung away into outer space. This doesn’t appears to have happened with this planet.

The thing I think is amazing about this planet is that because it has two suns it has a double sunset. It would be scary/exciting to look up into the sky and see two different suns orbiting. I wonder whether that means that there is only very rarely night on the planet, and whether if it was a rocky planet whether it would have seasons in the same way that the earth has seasons. If it did, I’d imagine that the seasons would be a lot more complex and difficult to predict.

I really hope that scientists find more planets like this. It would be even more exciting to find a planet that orbited three stars (is that possible? Probably not) or a planet that was rocky and capable of sustaining life around a double star system. I doubt it will be long before we see scientists find something like this.

It’s going to be a good (but expensive) month for gaming over the next few weeks! If you’re a gamer then you’re probably trying to make the decision about which games to get and which to leave until they go down in price, so I thought I’d start this new and improved version of the blog with a list of the games I’m going to get straight away. Obviously if I had the budget I’d get them all, but I don’t so I’ve got to be a bit more picky!

  • Fifa 12 – I use to play PES but that’s gone very downhill recently, so I’m sticking with FIFA this year. It used to be that PES had the best game play but FIFA had all the official licences – now it seems to be that FIFA has both, so unless PES does something dramatic soon they may as well give up I think.
  • Skyrim – I’m a big fan of Oblivion (as those of you who read the last blog will know) so this was always going to be on my “must buy” list. If comes out in November, but it seems like it’s been a very long wait since the last part of the Elder Scrolls series. I can’t wait for this game – I think it may take up a lot of my free time!
  • Zelda: Skyward Sword – This is shaping up to be a really good game even though most people thought that it wouldn’t be.

There are a load of others I’d like to get. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is out already, is one that I’m planning on playing at some point.

So which games are you going to get?

Let me know in the comments!
